Bailey School Kids Book Series

November 26, 2018

The Bailey School Kids book series is an entertaining set of chapter books for kids. The series is written by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton Jones. Each book follows Howie, Liza, Melody, and Eddie as they encounter a strange grown-up who may or may not be a mythical creature. Throughout the series the students have found a grown-up who they believe to be a vampire, a mermaid, an elf, a ghost, a werewolf, Santa Claus, and more! Does this sound like a series your students would enjoy? Here are three activities your students can use with these books in the classroom.

Are your students reading the Bailey School Kids books? This flip book and school house craft booklet will allow your students to work their way through any of the chapter books in the series while focusing on several different reading skills.

BAILEY SCHOOL KIDS FLIP BOOKS

These flip books are open-ended enough to be used with any of the books in the Bailey School Kids series. You’ll find seven pages included in this flip book.

Students can use this flip book with any of the books in the Bailey School Kids series. The pages include story setting, problem & solution, character description, story summary, favorite part, and a book review.

Because the students encounter a strange grown-up in each text, I have included a Strange Sightings page. For the book Mermaids Don’t Run Track, a few of the kids are convinced that Coach Waterford is really a mermaid who has turned into a human. As students read, they can record information about Coach Waterford’s appearance, thoughts, actions, and words.

The Bailey School Kids book series centers around four students who encounter a strange grown-up in town. This Strange Sightings page allows students to describe the grown-up the students are focused on in each book.

When students are finished reading, they can also rate the book and recommend it to a friend.

BAILEY SCHOOL KIDS SCHOOL HOUSE CRAFT BOOKLET

All four students go to Bailey Elementary School, which is also the setting for many of the books in the series. I thought it would be fun to create a school house craft booklet to go with the Bailey School Kids series.

This school house craft is actually a reading response booklet that can be used with any of the books in the Bailey School Kids series. There are several reading response template pages included along with some open-ended response pages.

I have included the same response pages that can be found in the flip book. These pages have a pentagon shape so they fit into the school house craft booklet. While many of the stories take place in Bailey Elementary School, there are some that take place outside of the school. In Monsters Don’t Scuba Dive, the story takes place at Camp Lone Wolf. This Story Setting Page allows students to describe and draw a picture to match each story.

There are six pre-made reading response templates you can use with this Bailey School Kids school house craft. These include story setting, problem & solution, character description, story summary, favorite part, and a book review.

If your students are working on a specific reading skill, the open-ended pages are easy to add on to the school house craft booklet. There are blank pages, lined pages, and a picture/writing combination page. These are great for students working on visualization, vocabulary, making connections, questions, and more! Here’s an example of how the lined page can be used for writing questions during reading.

These open-ended response pages can be used with any of the books in the Bailey School Kids series. These are great for students working on visualization, vocabulary, making connections, questions, and more!

The picture/writing combination page is great for working on vocabulary. Students can write the context of the vocabulary word and a definition. Then students can add an illustration to demonstrate understanding.

These open-ended response pages can be used with any of the books in the Bailey School Kids series. These would be great for student practice with visualization, vocabulary, making connections, questions, and more!

BAILEY SCHOOL KIDS READING JOURNALS

If you’re planning to use the Bailey School Kids books with your reading group or book club, you can use a reading response journal to keep all of the student materials in one place. These book companions contain comprehension questions to guide your readers through each chapter and a handful of graphic organizers.

You can find all of the book companions I have created for the Bailey School Kids series here. I will be adding even more book companions for this series in the future. Let me know if there’s a book companion you would like to see.

PEEK INSIDE THE BAILEY SCHOOL KIDS SERIES

This series has branched out into a junior series, as well. For your third grade readers, stick with the original series. These books will include the word DON’T in the title. Your second grade readers can start with the junior series. Each of these books will include the word DO in the title. Here is a little glimpse into both sets of books so you can determine which works best for your readers.

The Bailey School Kids book series is a great choice for 2nd and 3rd grade readers. Here is a glimpse inside the books so you can decide if the main series or the junior series would be best for your readers.

I hope your students continue to read and enjoy the Mercy Watson series as much as mine do!

My favorite library find this week takes us on a j My favorite library find this week takes us on a journey to see the hidden gems that lie in the tiny worlds most of us are too busy to notice.

When a young boy visits his grandmother’s house, he doesn’t just see scraps of ribbon lying around, mushrooms clustered under a log in the forest, or shells hiding along the beach. He sees tiny worlds where pie tins become playgrounds, ants become farmers, and tide pools teem with life waiting to be explored.

These tiny worlds are full of whimsy and imagination, but they have one problem: He seems to be the only one who sees them. While at first Grandma keeps trying to draw him out to a busy park or the beach or the zoo, eventually she realizes that her grandson’s tiny worlds are big enough for her to meet him there.

This book uses beautifully detailed illustrations to share a message about stopping to appreciate the small things, the importance of connection, and accepting others for who they are. It would be a great book to share with any child whose imagination comes to life no matter where they go!

Vibrant illustrations pair perfectly with this story told from the perspective of the monarch butterfly. Despite the long and difficult journey, readers will appreciate just how incredible these insects are.

A BIG thank you to the publishers for sharing these books with my family! They would be a fantastic addition to your butterfly or life cycle unit.

My favorite library find this week takes an up clo My favorite library find this week takes an up close look at the epic journey of a Pacific salmon.

If you live in the PNW, the 4th grade students probably study the salmon life cycle at some point during the year. If they’re lucky, they even get to help care for some of the eggs for months at their school before releasing the salmon fry into a local creek. I know I got to do this when I taught 4th grade, and my own kids did, too!

This book combines beautiful illustrations with inviting & informative text that captures each unique stage of the Coho salmon. The back matter provides additional information about the life cycle stages. It would be a fantastic addition to your salmon or life cycles unit!

💛 LIBRARY STACK 💛 Thought I’d stop and take a mom 💛 LIBRARY STACK 💛

Thought I’d stop and take a moment to admire my current checkouts from the local library, especially since I was recently reminded that February is National Library Lovers’ Month.

Do I often get strange looks and questions when another patron sees me with a large stack of picture books at the self-checkout desk? Yes, but that hasn’t stopped me!

Which titles from this stack would you reach for first?

Alternating between verse and facts, this book gives readers a front row seat to some of the biggest shipwrecks ever found. We also get introduced to some of the scientists, divers, and treasure hunters behind these discoveries.

Whether you know an aspiring marine archaeologist or someone who loves a good treasure hunt, this book would be a good fit for any curious, adventurous reader!
