Has your mind ever been filled with doubts or negative thoughts about your self-worth? It’s more common than you think! The Awfulizer is a story that helps show children that shame is a powerful emotion, but one that can be conquered with the right strategies and support. Here are some activities you can pair with The Awfulizer.

About This Book

James’ life changes the day he meets The Awfulizer, a strange monster who follows James everywhere he goes and reminds him of all the things he’s done wrong.

The Awfulizer: Learning to Overcome the Shame Game by Kristin Maher and Robert Dunn

The more James starts to believe the lies The Awfulizer tells him, the more James withdraws and begins to change.

Fortunately, James’ parents notice the changes in his behavior. When they sit down to talk to James, he opens up about his feelings.

James’ mom shares her own experience with The Awfulizer.

Mom tells James all about the Shame Game.

James’ dad also gives advice on how to deal with The Awfulizer and the Shame Game. Over time, James shows that when he talks about his feelings with people he trusts, he can tune out The Awfulizer.

That’s when James uses his superpowers to become The Awesomizer. James realizes that even though the Awfulizer might be big and persistent, up against the Awesomizer, he will always lose.

Shame can be a powerful emotion for children and one they don’t often recognize. Students can easily get caught up in the Shame Game and start believing they are bad because of the mistakes they make. I love that this book gives shame a name and face. It shows children that many different people make mistakes and feel shame. But it also teaches kids strategies to deal with those feelings.

Activities for The Awfulizer

I have included several different activities that you can pair with this story. First, I have written a set of discussion questions to help guide your students through the book. Students can answer verbally, or you can have them respond in writing in a journal.

This set of discussion questions will help guide your students through The Awfulizer. Students can answer verbally, or you can have them respond in writing in a journal.

In the story, James learns that his superpower to fight The Awfulizer is to talk about how he’s feeling. That’s when he becomes The Awesomizer. Students can become superheroes with this Awesomizer activity. Have students brainstorm a list of people they trust to talk to when they are feeling shame and then write these names around their superhero. After that, students can color the picture.

Finally, I have added a few writing templates so students can respond to the text. These pages are a great place to write about the book’s message or the author’s purpose for writing this story. Students can also respond to one of the discussion questions or a prompt you have chosen. Since there is room for an illustration, students can either draw The Awfulizer from the story, or create their own version of this monster.

These writing templates can be used to write about the story, share the author's message, or to respond to a discussion question. Students can draw The Awfulizer, or create their own monster.

My favorite library find this week takes us on a j My favorite library find this week takes us on a journey to see the hidden gems that lie in the tiny worlds most of us are too busy to notice.

When a young boy visits his grandmother’s house, he doesn’t just see scraps of ribbon lying around, mushrooms clustered under a log in the forest, or shells hiding along the beach. He sees tiny worlds where pie tins become playgrounds, ants become farmers, and tide pools teem with life waiting to be explored.

These tiny worlds are full of whimsy and imagination, but they have one problem: He seems to be the only one who sees them. While at first Grandma keeps trying to draw him out to a busy park or the beach or the zoo, eventually she realizes that her grandson’s tiny worlds are big enough for her to meet him there.

This book uses beautifully detailed illustrations to share a message about stopping to appreciate the small things, the importance of connection, and accepting others for who they are. It would be a great book to share with any child whose imagination comes to life no matter where they go!

Vibrant illustrations pair perfectly with this story told from the perspective of the monarch butterfly. Despite the long and difficult journey, readers will appreciate just how incredible these insects are.

A BIG thank you to the publishers for sharing these books with my family! They would be a fantastic addition to your butterfly or life cycle unit.

My favorite library find this week takes an up clo My favorite library find this week takes an up close look at the epic journey of a Pacific salmon.

If you live in the PNW, the 4th grade students probably study the salmon life cycle at some point during the year. If they’re lucky, they even get to help care for some of the eggs for months at their school before releasing the salmon fry into a local creek. I know I got to do this when I taught 4th grade, and my own kids did, too!

This book combines beautiful illustrations with inviting & informative text that captures each unique stage of the Coho salmon. The back matter provides additional information about the life cycle stages. It would be a fantastic addition to your salmon or life cycles unit!

💛 LIBRARY STACK 💛 Thought I’d stop and take a mom 💛 LIBRARY STACK 💛

Thought I’d stop and take a moment to admire my current checkouts from the local library, especially since I was recently reminded that February is National Library Lovers’ Month.

Do I often get strange looks and questions when another patron sees me with a large stack of picture books at the self-checkout desk? Yes, but that hasn’t stopped me!

Which titles from this stack would you reach for first?

Alternating between verse and facts, this book gives readers a front row seat to some of the biggest shipwrecks ever found. We also get introduced to some of the scientists, divers, and treasure hunters behind these discoveries.

Whether you know an aspiring marine archaeologist or someone who loves a good treasure hunt, this book would be a good fit for any curious, adventurous reader!
