Throughout our lives we are faced with many changes. Change can be good, but it isn’t always easy. It involves taking risks and being open to new possibilities. Don’t Be Afraid to Drop by Julia Cook shows kids how keeping an open mind and taking on a positive perspective can help us step outside of our comfort zone. I want to share some activities you can pair with this book.

Way up in the sky, Hopp the raindrop is scared of change.
Hopp loves his little cloud. Everyone knows his name and he gets to play with his raindrop friends. It’s safe and predictable, so Hopp isn’t ready to leave it all behind.
When Hopp finally decides to let go and embrace change, he discovers how his gift helps others, too.
This book has a great message about taking risks and embracing change. Since kids might feel anxious or uncomfortable, I love that Julia Cook has included some helpful tips for how to help kids cope with and prepare for change. This would be a great book to share with any child who is at a transitional point in their life.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO DROP ACTIVITIES
Here are a few simple activities you can use either during or after reading the story.
- Questions: There are 8 questions to help guide your discussion as you read the book.
- Big Feelings: In this story, Hopp the raindrop is scared of change. Students will look at raindrop faces to determine how each one feels and share about a time they felt that way.
- Written Response: Students can draw and write about the story or write the answer to one of the discussion questions.
