It was the perfect summer. That is, until Jeremy Ross moved into the house down the street and became neighborhood enemy number one. Luckily, Dad had a surefire way to get rid of enemies: Enemy Pie. But part of the secret recipe was spending an entire day playing with the enemy!

Enemy Pie Activities

This book companion has a large focus on comprehension and vocabulary. This resource has 12 comprehension questions to help guide the discussion as you read. Students can also respond to these questions in writing. To boost student engagement, you might place these comprehension cards into a pie plate and stir with a wire whisk before selecting a question.

For vocabulary, I selected 15 words for this story. Each vocabulary card has a matching definition. Students can play a memory matching game or use the cards in a pocket chart center. To continue working with these words, students can complete the fill-in-the-blanks page or vocabulary match-up activity.

These Enemy Pie vocabulary activities include cards with definitions, a match-up page, and a fill-in-the-blanks practice page.

Friendship Pie Craft

After reading the story, students will write a recipe for Friendship Pie. It’s important to discuss the qualities of a good friend. I tend to help scaffold the information needed to write the recipes and record this information on an anchor chart.
Measurement Words
dash – sprinkle – cup – touch – teaspoon – tablespoon – handful
Ingredients
kindness – loyalty – trust – patience – support – laughter – respect – time
The Steps
pour – mix – knead – combine – stir – mold
Students can pick and choose from the list to write a recipe. This recipe card fits inside of this pie craft. These would look great on display in the hallway.
After reading Enemy Pie, students will create their own recipe for Friendship Pie. The recipe card can be placed inside this friendship pie craft.

Friendly Advice Pie Craft

As I mentioned, this book touches on the theme of friendship. At the beginning of the year I like to give my students scenarios they may face during the school year and ask, “What would you do?” That’s why I added this Friendly Advice Pie craft. Students are given four situations, which open like a pie slice.  Students can write their responses under each flap.

After reading Enemy Pie, you can talk to students about other friendship scenarios they might face. Students can offer friendly advice using this pie craft.

You can grab all of these resources and more in this Book Companion. It has been recently updated to include digital options for some of the student pages, too.
This Enemy Pie book companion contains a friendship pie craft, comprehension questions, vocabulary activities, graphic organizers, and more!
I hope you have found some activities and resources you can take back into your own classroom! If you enjoy this resource, be sure to check out these book activities.
