Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

August 29, 2018

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is an imaginative story to read during an air and weather unit, but could be shared in your classroom any time of year. There are so many activities you can pair with this text, but here are a few that I think your students will love!

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is an imaginative story to read during an air and weather unit, but could be shared in your classroom any time of year. After reading, your students can select a wild weather, write a weather report, draw the scene on a TV screen, and create a kid reporter to tie it all together. This companion also contains comprehension, vocab, and other activities to pair with the story.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS BOOK

In case you aren’t familiar, the tiny town of Chewandswallow was very much like any other tiny town, except for its weather, which came three times a day—at breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Life for the townspeople was delicious, until the miraculous food weather took a turn for the worse. The food got larger and larger, and so did the portions. The flood of huge food caused chaos, and the people feared for their lives. Something had to be done…before it was too late! If you don’t already have a copy of this book in your classroom or school library, you can find a copy on Amazon.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS CRAFT

Can you imagine what it would be like to have food falling from the sky? The townspeople of Chewandswallow had to rely on their local weather forecasters to let them know what they could expect to eat for each meal. I thought students would enjoy creating their own wild weather reports, drawing a scene of their wild weather, and then making a kid reporter craft to go with it.

After reading Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, students can create their own wild weather reports, draw a scene of their wild weather on a TV screen, and then make a kid reporter craft.

Students can either choose their own wild weather or use the included spinner activity to leave their weather to chance.

Once students know their wild weather, they can begin to write a weather report. I have included weather words and terms along with several scripts to give students a baseline for what they can write about. Students can use these ideas to create their own weather report.

When writing their weather reports, students can use these tools to help them. There is a wild weather spinner, weather words and terms, and several scripts students can use to get started with their weather reports.

Once the weather report has been written, students can draw their wild weather scene on the TV craft and begin to assemble their kid reporter. I have included several different hairstyles to add a little variety to this craft.

This kid reporter craft for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs contains six different hair options to add variety to your display.

When finished, these can be put on a bulletin board display for other classrooms to enjoy.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS ACTIVITIES

I have also added a variety of activities to this book companion. You’ll find comprehension questions, graphic organizers, vocabulary words, and a weather graphing activity included.

These comprehension questions can be used to guide discussion during and after reading Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

There are 12 vocabulary cards included in this book companion for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Students can also complete this vocabulary match-up activity to demonstrate understanding of the vocabulary words.

Since Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs discusses the weather throughout the story, I thought it would be fun to include this spin, tally, and graph activity in the book companion.

You can find all of these activities in this book companion.

BOOK VS. MOVIE

Many of your students may be familiar with the movie. While there are a few similarities, the two can vary greatly. You can use this free graphic organizer to compare and contrast the two.

After reading Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and watching the movie, students can compare and contrast the two using this FREE graphic organizer.

Have you ever WANTED something so much that you fe Have you ever WANTED something so much that you felt like you NEEDED to buy it? Guilty!

The concept of wants vs. needs can be tricky, especially for kids. So when I saw that Michael Rex wrote this new book, I knew I wanted it to have a home in my library.

The robots in this book need four things to survive:
- batteries for power
- arms to do work
- legs to move
- oil to run smoothly

When one robot prioritizes wants before needs, it trades away its oil, arms, legs, and batteries for a pile of stuff that it can’t even enjoy. Fortunately, the author gives the robot a reboot. With a second chance, the robot is able to make better choices. In the end, the robots are happy to HAVE the things they NEED so they can ENJOY the things they WANT!

I am a BIG fan of fractured fairy tales! The Pois I am a BIG fan of fractured fairy tales!

The Poisoned Apple adds a dark, but humorous spin on the tale of Snow White. Like the classic version, an evil witch detests Snow White and plans to get rid of her once and for all with a poisoned apple. However, things take a detour after that.

The witch didn’t know that Snow White was on her way to deliver lunch to the dwarfs when she finally put the poisoned apple in Snow White’s hands. As a gesture of kindness, Snow White gives the apple to a dwarf. He ends up giving the apple to a hungry forest creature. Meanwhile, the witch watches her plot spiral out of control. Can she get the apple back before it’s too late? Or will this scheming witch discover that what goes around comes around?

EMPATHY We tell kids that empathy is being able t EMPATHY

We tell kids that empathy is being able to understand and share how others are feeling, or being able to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes to see things from their perspective. But how can we get kids to show empathy? One of my favorite ways is using books to share examples of empathy that kids can then emulate. When @hangingwithms.cooper told me she had a new book about empathy, I couldn’t wait to read it.

The Sunshine Rock: A Story About Empathy follows Alexis as she moves to a new city with her family. The night before her first day at a new school, her brother gives her a Sunshine Rock, which she can use whenever she needs more support.

Alexis uses the rock to battle her nerves on the big day. After an embarrassing moment at the start of the day, the school counselor gathers the class for an important discussion about kindness and empathy. This challenges the class to find new ways to help Alexis feel welcome, included, and cared for in her new school.

This book would be great to share before welcoming a new student mid-year, but could also be read anytime your class needs a gentle reminder about showing empathy and kindness to others. A big thank you to Tahiya Cooper for sharing this new book with my family!
