Ready, Freddy Chapter Book Series

April 17, 2017

Are you looking for a new chapter book series your first and second graders will enjoy? Take a look at the Ready, Freddy series by Abby Klein. Today I want to share a few ways I use these chapter books with my students.

I find that my students love reading about Freddy Thresher and his classmates because Abby Klein has used her own classroom teaching experience to develop characters that bring real-life humor and problems to each of her stories that my students can relate to. Freddy begins the series as a first grader and eventually the series follows him to second grade. To learn more about Freddy and the series, you can grab this helpful guide from Scholastic.

Like many teachers, I use a variety of texts during guided reading, including chapter books. From time to time, I will also do Book Buddies. This is where I take my small group of students and divide them into pairs. They might all be reading different books, but all of the books will be from the same reading series so there are obvious comparisons to be made during group discussion. The Ready, Freddy books are perfect for Book Buddies, especially with the help of these flip books:

As the students read, they can record what they learn about Freddy. By discussing the character traits and evidence during group time, students begin to see the similarities of Freddy throughout the series.

Freddy faces a new problem in each story so I do have students identify the problem and solution.  As we discuss the problem and solution in each story, students begin to see similarities in how Freddy approaches a problem and eventually finds a solution.
If your students have brothers or sisters, they will certainly relate to the relationship between Freddy and his older sister, Suzie. In each story, Freddy finds himself in trouble and Suzie always manages to help him….for a price. I love to call this “Let’s Make a Deal” and the students can’t wait to find out what Suzie will make Freddy do!

Another thing your students will quickly learn is that Freddy Thresher loves sharks! Not only will your students find shark facts at the end of each story, but each illustration has the word FIN hidden inside. Fin Finder is a great way to engage your students with the illustrations!

Now, because Freddy Thresher loves sharks, a shark booklet can be a lot of fun! I have actually created two different styles of shark craft booklets for this series.

The first shark craft booklet can be used just like the flip book because it has ready-made response templates. It also has a blank page, a lined writing page, and a picture/writing combination page if you want to add your own types of reading responses along the way.

The second booklet offers a different style of shark. This booklet is a completely open-ended response booklet. There is a blank page, a lined writing page, and a picture/writing combination page.  I use these shark craft booklets for vocabulary words, questions, making connections, character comparisons, and more!

If you are fortunate enough to have multiple copies of a book from the Ready, Freddy series, I also have book companions with specific chapter-by-chapter comprehension checks. You can find those book companions here.

Do you have a favorite Ready, Freddy chapter book? I’d love to hear which book your students enjoy the most.

Happy Reading!

Kids love recess! But sometimes playground problem Kids love recess! But sometimes playground problems spill into the classroom. Books are a great tool for teaching playground expectations & etiquette. Here are a few of my favorites:⁣

The first few weeks of school are such an important time for building community and establishing routines. No matter the grade level, your classroom will have students who feel anxious about making friends. One of my favorite books of all time is Enemy Pie. Don’t be fooled by the title, though…this charming book has a happy ending!⁣
⁣
This story follows a young boy who was having a perfect summer. That is, until Jeremy Ross moved into a house down the street and became enemy number one. Luckily, Dad says he has the perfect way to get rid of enemies: Enemy Pie. Dad will do all the baking, but there’s one part he can’t do. In order for the recipe to work, the boy will have to spend a day with his enemy AND be nice to him.⁣
⁣
Can you figure out how this one ends? Swipe to take a peek inside the book and see one of my favorite activities to pair with the story. ⁣

My kids love to read, play board games & card game My kids love to read, play board games & card games, do puzzles, swim, play outside, and more. You know what else they love? Screen time! When Osmo reached out and asked if I’d like to try one of their kits, I figured this was a great opportunity to connect learning with screen time in a fun, playful way! ⁣
⁣
I chose the Genius Starter Kit which includes a set of Tangram pieces along with letter and number tiles. These pieces work with several of the apps that were quick and easy to download. These games help kids work on addition, subtraction, multiplication, spelling, word building, spatial awareness, and more!⁣
⁣
These games would work well in the classroom for centers, small groups, fast finishers, and more! There’s even an Osmo Parent app where you can see each child’s progress along with suggestions of ways to extend the learning and questions you can ask them. Thank you to @playosmo for sharing this Genius Starter Kit with my family! ⁣

⁣
In this book, Arfy is a reading buddy who visits schools and cuddles with kids while they read to him. One day, Arfy discovers a small turtle has come home with him by mistake. He starts writing letters and sending emails to the principal, teachers, and other staff members of the local school to find out who might be missing their pet turtle.⁣
⁣
This book would be great for learning more about turtles, to build excitement about a new class pet, or even to share during a friendly letter writing unit. In fact, years ago I introduced two stuffed animal pups as our class pets. My students got to take one home and then write a letter in a journal about their adventures together. It was so much fun!⁣
⁣
🐢 Fun Fact - we had 2 pet turtles for years before we got our dogs and had kids. Those same turtles would make special visits to my classroom and my students even got to watch them have a turtle race in our gym. Swipe through to see some pics of the book, my turtle, and a class pet. ⁣
⁣
If you could have a class pet, what would you pick?⁣

With a new school year about to start, it’s time to think about all the ways you will build relationships and classroom community. I love using books to model and encourage expectations for students. One book that’s great for kindness, empathy, and teaching kids the benefits of caring is Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud and David Messing.⁣
⁣
This book shares the concept of #bucketfillers . Kids learn different ways they can fill other people’s buckets through acts of kindness, sharing a smile, or with compliments. These things help kids fill their own buckets, too. On the flip side, the book also explores what words and actions are bucket dippers.⁣

The Invisible Boy is one of my favorite picture bo The Invisible Boy is one of my favorite picture books of all time. So, when I saw that Trudy Ludwig and Patrice Barton teamed up again, I didn’t hesitate to grab a copy of Brave Every Day.⁣
⁣
This book follows Camila, a young girl whose worries have her looking for a place to hide. And those worries seem to follow her all day (and night). Like many people, she has thoughts of “What if…?”, “I can’t…”, and “I’m scared…” that keep her from participating in the same activities as her peers. ⁣
⁣
When her class takes a field trip to the aquarium, Camila’s classmates are excited, but she’s feeling overwhelmed. When she wanders off to hide, she’s surprised to find she’s not alone (in more ways than one). When her anxious classmate asks her to help him, Camila discovers that her heart is bigger than her fears.⁣
⁣
This would be an amazing addition to your SEL collection. It has a great message about courage and compassion. I love that it normalizes how common it is to have fears about unknown situations and that it’s okay to ask for help.⁣
