Sneezy the Snowman Resources

January 10, 2017

Are you reading Sneezy the Snowman by Maureen Wright to your class this month? I want to share a few activities you can pair with this story that your students will enjoy!
Are you reading Sneezy the Snowman? Take a look at these comprehension questions, vocabulary activities, sequencing activity, graphic organizers, and snowman craft you can pair with the story.

About the Book

Sneezy the Snowman is a great book to share with your class in winter!
B-R-R-R-R! AH-CHOO!
Sneezy the Snowman is cold, cold, cold. To warm up, he drinks cocoa, sits in a hot tub, stands near a warm fire–and melts! But the children know just what to do to build him up again–and make him feel “just right”.
If you don’t have a copy of this book in your school or classroom library, you can find it on Amazon.

Sneezy the Snowman Activities

This picture book companion focuses mainly on comprehension and vocabulary. These 6 comprehension questions will help guide the discussion as you read. Students can also respond to these questions in writing.

After reading the story, students can put the story back together with this sequencing activity. I like to print the story events on a different color of paper than the main page so it adds a bit of color.

Once students can sequence the story, they are more prepared to retell or summarize the story. I have even included a snowman spinner activity that focuses on story elements.

I chose 6 vocabulary words for this story. Each vocabulary card has a matching definition. Students can play a memory matching game or use them in a pocket chart center. Then, students can work with their vocabulary words using this fill-in-the-blanks page and vocabulary match-up activity. To take vocabulary one step further, you can use the winter word templates with the vocabulary words. Students write the word on the hat. On the snowman, students can write an original sentence, draw a picture, write synonyms, etc. These can be put on display or even made into a small classroom book after adding other vocabulary words you are learning.

I have included several vocabulary activities for Sneezy the Snowman. There are vocabulary cards with definitions, a matching activity, a fill-in-the-blanks page, and a winter words activity where students can write sentences, definitions, or draw pictures for each vocabulary word.

Sneezy the Snowman Writing Craft

I also love to use craft booklets to get my students to respond to reading. This snowman template comes in three different options (lines, no lines, and lines with a picture space). After students have completed their reading responses, they can staple the pages together with the craft on top to create a snowman booklet.
After reading Sneezy the Snowman, students can put together this snowman craft. This can stand alone, or be used to create a snowman writing craft booklet.
In the story, Sneezy ends up eating ice cream to stay cool when he gets too warm. So I included this ice cream cone template you can use. You can stack the ice cream scoops:

Every time the children rebuild Sneezy the Snowman, they offer a new item of clothing for Sneezy to wear to stay warm. For a simple written response, you can have students change up the text and make small substitutions to keep the rhythm of the author’s writing style. These can stand alone or be paired with the snowman craft.

“Even the smallest can help make the biggest cha “Even the smallest can help make the biggest change.”

In this story, the smallest turtles have always climbed on top of the biggest turtles to reach the freshest fruit. The big turtles would eat the fallen berries which were often sour and rotten. It’s just the way it’s always been. But Littlest Turtle doesn’t think that’s fair, so he makes a plan to change the way things are done. But can he get the rest of the turtles to agree?

This new picture book shares an important message about using your voice to speak up for what is fair and right. Swipe to take a peek inside!

Sharing the stories of others through picture books offers kids a glimpse into the accomplishments and lives of others in an engaging and meaningful way. It allows kids to see the potential of big dreams, hard work, and overcoming obstacles, while also helping them broaden their knowledge of the world around them. And when kids connect with the person whose story is being told, they are bound to find even more books about them to learn more.

And all of that magic is on display in this beautifully written and illustrated book that follows one book’s journey through the hands of many different readers.
