Spookley the Square Pumpkin

The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano is a great picture book choice for October! This fictional story of a square pumpkin provides the reader with a message of celebrating differences and helping others. I want to share a pumpkin craft booklet that you can use with your students when reading this story.

Spookley was different.
He was odd,
he was rare.
Spookley the pumpkin wasn’t round – he was square!

What’s going on in the pumpkin patch? Well, a very unusual pumpkin has hatched. While all the others are round, Spookley is square. He’s not like his friends – they have curves, he has ends. And so everyone teases him, night and day.

But just before Halloween, the weather turns stormy. Winds toss the round pumpkins to and fro, and off they go, crashing and bashing and smashing – except Spookley. Can he, with his square little body, save the day?

This book can sometimes be difficult to find online for a good price. You can find The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin on Amazon, but I found it for a much better deal through Scholastic Book Clubs. It was one of three stories included in a Spooky Stories Pack and can be found in the Kindergarten September flyer.

Spookley the Square Pumpkin Craft

To put these pumpkin craft booklets together, you will need to print and cut out the templates.

Students will glue the stem, leaf, and eyes onto the cover to make a pumpkin face. They can even color in the eyes to add more detail.

After reading the story, you can choose which of the response pages to use. I have included templates for character traits, story elements, story retell, and a few writing options. Once students have completed their response pages, you can staple the pumpkin face on top and create a booklet. These can also be placed on a bulletin board!
