Pigeon Math by Asia Citro and Richard Watson is a humorous story about trying to determine the number of pigeons on the line when outside influences keep that number changing until the end.

Telling a story about pigeons should be simple. But what’s a narrator to do when the number of feathered friends is constantly changing? Can our intrepid storyteller use math facts to keep up with the unstable quantities…or is this pigeon-centric tale doomed?

There are a few different ways you can use this resource. Students can use the pigeon pieces to work through the problem on the 10-frame mat and then solve. Students can draw circles or other shapes to show their work on the 10-frame.

You can print extra pigeon pieces so students can glue the pieces directly on the 10-frame.

Optional: for addition problems, students can circle the two addends. For subtraction, students can cross out the number being subtracted.

As a culminating activity, each student in your class can complete their own page. You can put all of the pages into one class book that students can read and enjoy.

To extend this activity, I included a one page addition and subtraction practice page. There is a 10-frame on the page and 10 pigeon pieces at the bottom. Students can cut out and use these pieces to work out each problem, if needed.
