Many students need additional practice with their fact fluency. I like to make sure they have a solid foundation with addition facts to ten before moving onto larger problems. Here’s a fun dice game with a bowling theme to help students practice addition to ten.
TEN-PIN KNOCKOUT ADDITION TO TEN DICE GAME
Using dice adds instant engagement with math fact practice. In this game, students roll one die. If a student rolls 1-5, he knocks down that same number of pins and rolls one more time to complete the set. He adds the two numbers and records the total. However, if he rolls a 6, that’s a gutter ball and records a zero.
There are a few ways you can provide additional scaffolding and support. By placing the page in a sheet protector, you can not only save copies, but students can use a dry erase marker to physically mark off and count the bowling pins knocked down. Some pages have the pins numbered for additional support.
To provide a challenge, ask students to determine their grand total for all ten sets.
