If you follow me on Instagram, you probably know just how much I love to read and share books with my kids. Every night I try to post a picture of the books I read to my kids for bedtime stories. Recently, we read Dragons Love Tacos and Dragons Love Tacos 2, The Sequel by Adam Rubin and Daniel Salmieri. We enjoyed a lot of giggles while reading the stories, and the books had my mind spinning with ideas. I want to share some activities you can pair with these books.

ABOUT THE BOOKS

Just as the titles suggest, dragons love tacos. But what happens when fire-breathing dragons devour tacos with spicy salsa? You guessed it! The first book follows a young boy as he prepares to host a taco party for dragons that doesn’t end quite like he expected. The sequel follows a young boy and a group of dragons as they race through time to save tacos before they become extinct. No matter which book you choose, it’s sure to be a hit with kids!

DRAGONS LOVE TACOS ACTIVITIES

These comprehension questions will help guide your discussion as you read Dragons Love Tacos. These can be answered in writing, too.

Both book companions have a large focus on comprehension and vocabulary. You’ll find 12 comprehension questions to pair with each story. These can help guide the discussion as you read the book or to check for understanding after reading. Students can also respond to these questions in writing.

For each book, I have selected a set of vocabulary words or phrases to focus on. There are vocabulary cards with definitions that can be printed in color, or use the black and white option to print on colored paper. Students can work with these vocabulary words with these matching and fill-in-the-blank activities.

For Dragons Love Tacos, students can extend their learning with these activities. They can create their own taco party invitation, use clues to solve the date of the party, and complete a book review.

Since the first book companion includes a writing craft, I decided to add a directed drawing to the second pack. There are two different styles of dragons. Students can add details and choose colors to make each dragon their own. I have also included some suggested writing prompts and writing template papers.
