Picture Day Books for Kids

Picture Day Perfection

It’s picture day, and the boy at the center of this charming picture book wants to make sure his picture is perfect. It seems as though everything’s going wrong for him―he has bedhead, a stained shirt, and a big scowl on his face. But when he goes up for his picture, he thinks about his terrible appearance, and he smiles―because he secretly wants his picture to be the worst ever taken! But just as he smiles, the photo is snapped and his plan is ruined―the photo looks great.

The Class Picture Day from the Black Lagoon

Picture day is here and the whole class is ready to “say cheese.” But Hubie isn’t interested in getting his photo snapped. His hair won’t stay in place and he doesn’t know what pose to choose. He can’t tell which is his good side. Can Hubie face his fears about his face? Grab some activities to pair with this book here.

Amira’s Picture Day

Ramadan has come to an end, and Amira can’t wait to stay home from school to celebrate Eid. There’s just one hiccup: it’s also school picture day. How can Amira be in two places at once?

Picture Day Jitters

The class photo is scheduled for the end of the day—can everyone’s favorite teacher, Sarah Jane Hartwell, keep them looking neat and tidy? She has the jitters again! Mrs. Hartwell is determined to keep her students looking perfect for their school pictures. This means no chalk at recess, no experiments during science, and eating lunch in the classroom instead of the cafeteria. Bo-ring! By the end of the day, the students look their best, but their smiles are missing. Mrs. Hartwell lets them cut loose after their individual photos are taken, forgetting that the class photo is still to come!

The Night Before Class Picture Day

It’s the night before class picture day, and kids all down the block are getting ready. Everyone wants to look perfect for the photo. They fix their hair, practice smiles, and choose outfits. At school the next day, they try to stay picture-perfect. Will everything look perfect for the big moment when they say, “Cheese?”

On Account of the Gum

When a child goes to sleep with gum in their mouth, it seems inevitable that the gum will end up in their hair. The natural next step is to seek advice on how to remove the gum, from the Internet and family members, which proves to be disastrous. As objects accumulate in the child’s hair, they become more and more frustrated. To make matters worse, it is not only the child’s birthday but also school picture day!

Rostam’s Picture-Day Pusteen

Rostam and Maman recently moved to the United States, and Baba is still working in Iran. Now it’s picture day at school, and Rostam doesn’t want to wear his pusteen. Even though Baba wore it when he was little, and it’s beautiful and soft, Rostam worries that the other kids will think it’s weird.

But sometimes being brave means sharing your whole self with others.

Mrs. Toggle’s Class Picture Day

When Mrs. Toggle’s bad hair day coincides with class picture day, her students, the custodian, the nurse, the art teacher, the librarian, and the principal all try to improve the situation.

Bedhead

It was BIG, it was BAD, it was…BEDHEAD! No doubt about it, Oliver’s having a very bad hair day. His parents and sister try to help. They push, they pull, they spritz and they spray; they goop, they glop, and they mousse. But Oliver’s hair is still way out of control. And today’s class picture day! What’s a boy to do?

If you could build the perfect town, what would it If you could build the perfect town, what would it look like?

🌳 Would it include spectacular trees with walkways that rise high above the ground?

🦒 Would you add an open-air zoo with well-behaved animals, including Jurassic and mythical creatures?

🤖 Would there be robots running the grocery store where all items are free?

📚 Would your library be filled with cozy nooks and stacks of books, where no one tells you what you can and can’t read?

Those are just some of the ideas Jack shares with Mayor McKay in Chris Van Dusen’s latest book, If I Built a Town.

I love that all of these books encourage kids to explore their imagination without limitations. They would be a great addition to your home or classroom library!

If you love Strictly No Elephants as much as I do, If you love Strictly No Elephants as much as I do, you’ll want to read The Trouble with Giraffes.

In this follow-up story, a young girl is on her way to Pet Club with her giraffe. When they get there, her giraffe is too tall to fit inside. I guess it’s a good thing there’s some delicious salad right outside the clubhouse window!

After the girl gets hurt, her friends are ready with a welcome back party at the clubhouse. When she realizes just how high off the ground it is, she starts questioning how welcoming the Pet Club actually is - especially if some can’t get inside.

Can she find a way to make sure All Are Welcome, just like the sign on the door says?

This sweet story reminds us that friendship often requires a lot of compromise. But when one friend can’t quite reach the middle, a true friend will meet you more than halfway. It combines a story of friendship with an important message about inclusion and accessibility.

Have you read 🦒 The Trouble with Giraffes or 🐘 Strictly No Elephants yet?

Thank you @simonkids for sharing this book with my family! I can’t wait to see if more books are added to The Pet Club series by @lisamantchev and @yooillustration !
