Grab a Book, Take a Look (Reading Response Sheets & More)

December 4, 2014

I finally finished a project I have been working on for years.  With every reading strategy I taught and every small group I worked with, I found that I wasn’t always able to find a “just right” reading response sheet.  So, what does a teacher do in this situation?  She starts making her own.  This ended up being FAR BIGGER… Read More

What’s Cookin’ in Your Class? {October}

October 3, 2014

Do you ever wonder what everyone else is doing in their classroom each month?  I know you can see weekly lesson plans on Sundays, but I love this linky idea from Tamara (Mrs. Russell’s Room).  This one starts at the beginning of the month, which means you have time to gather resources and set a plan ahead of time. I just looked and noticed that almost three months has passed by since I last posted here. I could go on and on with excuses, but here’s the real reason: This little man joined our family in June.  We are so fortunate because his big sister loves him to pieces!  I have decided to take a year off to stay… Read More

It can be scary to try something new! ⁣ ⁣ Soar It can be scary to try something new! ⁣
⁣
Soar follows Ramone Ruby-Throat as he gets ready to fly for the very first time. As nervous thoughts run through his mind, other changes start happening, too. His belly hurts, his beak aches, his wings feel bent, and his feet are tired. He thinks it might be best to wait another day. But soon his mother swoops in, acknowledges his feelings, and helps encourage Ramone to take a chance. It isn’t long before he begins to soar!⁣

Kids show their worries and fears in different ways. Often, it can be difficult for them to connect their physical reactions with their emotions. This book can help start that conversation. Not only does this book have a great message that kids will relate to, but the brightly colored images will certainly catch their eye!⁣

Thank you to @hillarydaecher , @schifferkids , and @ponchobird for sharing this book with my family!⁣

I’m the strongest of them all!⁣
That’s right. I can say NO.⁣
⁣
⁣
No is a very powerful word, but it isn’t always easy to say. Learning to say no is an important step towards setting boundaries and protecting your energy, your beliefs, and your heart. I Can Say No is a great book to show kids that it’s okay, and sometimes necessary, to set personal boundaries to protect yourself, your heart, and your energy. Too often we let the guilt of disappointing someone or hurting someone’s feelings get in the way of what we really want or need. I love that Jenny Simmons has included a page of tips for educators and caregivers in the back of the book. These are a great way to keep the discussion going long after the book has closed.⁣

Do your kids love building forts? Mine do! They us Do your kids love building forts? Mine do! They use blankets, stools, and other furniture to make it as big as they can. Then they fill it with their bedding and stuffed animals. Inside, you can find them reading books, playing games, and giggling. I think that’s why I was drawn to this book. This story follows a group of friends as they build new forts to match each season. This book is jam-packed with verbs and will have your kids dreaming of their next fort creation!

When Farah notices the butterflies have disappeare When Farah notices the butterflies have disappeared from her neighborhood, she realizes there aren’t enough green areas for them. Around the same time, she discovers that the mayor is looking for ideas on what to do with some public land nearby. That’s when Farah springs into action. She writes a letter to the mayor with plans for a community garden filled with beautiful flowers and healthy foods. But she isn’t the only one with plans for the empty lot. Can Farah get her community involved to see her idea come to life?⁣

When kids want to get involved and make a difference in their community, they might need some help getting started. Books can help! Rise Up and Write It just might encourage and inspire the next young activist. I love that this book includes little envelopes filled with surprises between the pages. ⁣

So she decides to create her own friends out of materials and items she has around the house. These friends make her feel comfortable.⁣
⁣
But one day, Meesha is invited to a party. It is loud, chaotic, and unpredictable, so Meesha finds a quiet corner to create some other friends to play with. Soon, a boy named Josh asks if she will show him her creations. Even though Meesha is hesitant, she soon opens up and realizes how much fun it is to have a real friend. ⁣
⁣
Making friends is not always easy. It takes time, trust, and finding common ground. I love that this book showcases both the joy and struggles in making and keeping friends. This would be a great book to add to your SEL book collection or books about friendship.⁣
