Presidents’ Day Video

I like to start with a short video. This one gives a brief overview (less than two minutes) of Presidents’ Day. Once we have the basics of when and why we celebrate Presidents’ Day, we’re ready to dig deeper and focus on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

You can find even more Presidents’ Day videos here and here.

Nonfiction Books

When learning about Washington and Lincoln, there are so many books to choose from. Here are my favorites that I use for both guided reading and shared reading. You probably have them in your classroom library, too!

Here are some great nonfiction books to share with your students for Presidents' Day.

        • George Washington (National Geographic Kids)
        • Abraham Lincoln (National Geographic Kids)
        • Weird, But True: Presidents (National Geographic Kids)
        • Abraham Lincoln (Magic Tree House Fact Tracker)

Presidents’ Day Activities and Resources

Since we are familiar with nonfiction text features at this point of the year, one of my favorite activities to start with is a scavenger hunt. Not only is this fun for students, but it helps them understand the way the text has been organized and gives them a preview of the information to come.

This scavenger hunt is a great activity to use when reading books for Presidents' Day.

As we begin reading, students can record information learned about each president on their graphic organizers.
Graphic organizers are a great way to record information learned from books about Presidents' Day.
Reading biographies is also a great time to work on timelines. The National Geographic Kids texts have a timeline included. After studying these timelines, we use information from Abraham Lincoln (Magic Tree House Fact Tracker) to organize important events in Lincoln’s life.
After reading about Abraham Lincoln's life, students can use this timeline activity.

Even though nonfiction tends to be more straightforward than fiction, I find that many of my students struggle to comprehend as quickly as with fiction. I like to use comprehension checks to make sure we aren’t moving too quickly through the texts.
These comprehension checks are a great way to make sure your students understand what they read about each president.

But that’s not all.  I also love to combine our new learning with a craft.

These crafts are a great culminating activity when celebrating Presidents' Day.

You can read more about these projects in this post.

You will find most of the resources mentioned above in these book companions:

Sometimes a book comes along and I don’t think t Sometimes a book comes along and I don’t think twice before I press Add to Cart. This is one of those books and I think you’ll love it, too!💙

In this story, a family spends the day at the beach. One boy builds a sandcastle while his brothers play soccer nearby. When their ball crushes the sandcastle, it stirs up a variety of emotions. Dad sits down to help the boy acknowledge, name, and process his feelings.

“Your feelings are yours - each one is okay.
What you’re feeling today may soon go away.
Listen to your emotions - learn how to name them.
Then you’ll know better how to explain them.”

The message that it’s perfectly normal to have a wide range of feelings is one that boys need to hear more often. Pete Oswald has paired his rhyming text beautifully with detailed illustrations that only enhance this must-read book!💙 Swipe to take a peek inside.

What do you love to do when you’re with your friends? If you are anything like me, it’s not about WHAT you do, but WHO you spend your time with. That’s just one reason I was drawn to Nothing’s Wrong.

In this story, Anders and Jeff are headed out for a picnic. After baking the most delicious apple pie, Anders discovers it was ruined by the rain. Worried it will spoil their outing, Anders pretends that nothing’s wrong, but Jeff gets the sense that his friend isn’t being honest.

Should he give his friend space?
Should he check in with his friend?
Should he help him out?
Or should he just be there by his side?

How can Jeff be a good friend if he doesn’t know what his friend might need?

This book combines laugh-out-loud humor with a heartwarming message about true friendship. It reminds readers that even when nothing seems to go right, a good friend will be there for you at the end of the day.

✏️I don’t know what to write! Have you hear ✏️I don’t know what to write!

Have you heard that one before? It happens. Kids get writer’s block. When they do, they will need some inspiration to get back on track. I like to use books and I have a new one I think you’ll love!

Birdie usually has no problem creating masterpieces. However, as the end of the school year gets closer, she’s struggling to get creative.

Have no fear, the Storytellers are here!

Soon, Birdie’s school supplies hatch a plan to spark wonder, build curiosity, and inspire new ideas. Will this plan get Birdie’s creative juices flowing, or will she be defeated yet again by her nemesis, the blank page?

This book would be a great addition to your writing mentor texts. It celebrates that kids are surrounded by inspiration and encourages them to begin with wonder.

What is your favorite day of the year? For Danbi What is your favorite day of the year?

For Danbi, it’s not her birthday or even Halloween. It’s Children’s Day, which she says is the day all your wishes come true. Danbi has BIG plans to celebrate like she did in Korea. She invites her friends to a party where she promises kites, magic castles, tigers, train rides, and chocolate chip cookies. Unfortunately, Mom and Dad have to work that day, so they plan a small party behind the deli instead.

Shortly after the party begins, a storm arrives and everyone heads inside. Seeing the disappointment on her friends’ faces, Danbi knows she has to save the party. With a few special ingredients and A LOT of whipped cream, Danbi inspires her friends to work together to make some incredible creations. This might just be a Children’s Day they will never forget!❤️
