The Jelly Donut Difference (FREEBIE)

August 4, 2017

I was recently introduced to the story The Jelly Donut Difference by Maria Dismondy, and it has quickly become one of my favorite character education books. The Jelly Donut Difference focuses on Leah and Dexter, a brother and sister who don’t always get along, but eventually learn about kindness and generosity.

Are you getting ready to read The Jelly Donut Difference? Focus on acts of kindness with this free activity.

About the Book

Leah and Dexter are brother and sister but they don’t always get along. Will Leah and Dexter learn to put their differences aside and join forces for good? Could small, random acts of kindness in the community really make a big impact for all ages?

Find out how the ooey, gooey jelly donuts in this story become a delicious testament to the power of kindness, caring and generosity.

If you don’t already have a copy of this book in your classroom or school library, you can find it on Amazon.

The Jelly Donut Difference is a great book to add to your character education collection. Here is a free craft that focuses on the importance of kindness using the donut theme from the story. An option for half a dozen ways to show kindness is included for younger students.

I’m going to show you three different ways you can use this with your students.

The Jelly Donut Difference Activity

Today I want to share a little kindness with you. I have a little activity that I think your students will love: A Dozen Ways to Be Kind.

A Dozen Ways to Be Kind Freebie to Pair with The Jelly Donut Difference

I’m going to show you three different ways you can use this with your students.

Option 1: File Folders

A Dozen Ways to Show Kindness - use file folders to create the look of a donut box

I started with a file folder and cut out a section on the front that was 4″x 6″ so the folder would resemble a donut box with a see-through window. I also cut a sheet protector into a 5″x 7″ rectangle and taped that to the inside of the file folder to help create the illusion of a donut box window (you might be able to use saran wrap or just leave the window open, too.)

From there, students can write a dozen ways to show kindness on the donuts inside the folder, decorate the donuts, and even decorate the outside of the file folder.

Option 2: Paper Donut Box

For this option, I grabbed two sheets of brown paper. I used washi tape to hold the two pages together at the top to create a flap. Then I glued on the title cover.

A Dozen Ways to Be Kind Freebie - includes 12 ways to show kindness

On the inside, there’s room to add two more parts. The top section is where students can write down a dozen ways to show kindness. The bottom has a dozen donuts that students can decorate any way they choose. When on display, the top flap can open and close.

Note – you could also skip the lined paper option and have students write the acts of kindness on the donuts like you saw in option one.

Option 3: Modified Donut Box for Younger Students

This option is set up just like the one shown in option two, but focuses on half a dozen ways to be kind. This option uses just one sheet of cardstock (or construction paper) that has been folded in half.

My favorite library find this week takes us on a j My favorite library find this week takes us on a journey to see the hidden gems that lie in the tiny worlds most of us are too busy to notice.

When a young boy visits his grandmother’s house, he doesn’t just see scraps of ribbon lying around, mushrooms clustered under a log in the forest, or shells hiding along the beach. He sees tiny worlds where pie tins become playgrounds, ants become farmers, and tide pools teem with life waiting to be explored.

These tiny worlds are full of whimsy and imagination, but they have one problem: He seems to be the only one who sees them. While at first Grandma keeps trying to draw him out to a busy park or the beach or the zoo, eventually she realizes that her grandson’s tiny worlds are big enough for her to meet him there.

This book uses beautifully detailed illustrations to share a message about stopping to appreciate the small things, the importance of connection, and accepting others for who they are. It would be a great book to share with any child whose imagination comes to life no matter where they go!

Vibrant illustrations pair perfectly with this story told from the perspective of the monarch butterfly. Despite the long and difficult journey, readers will appreciate just how incredible these insects are.

A BIG thank you to the publishers for sharing these books with my family! They would be a fantastic addition to your butterfly or life cycle unit.

My favorite library find this week takes an up clo My favorite library find this week takes an up close look at the epic journey of a Pacific salmon.

If you live in the PNW, the 4th grade students probably study the salmon life cycle at some point during the year. If they’re lucky, they even get to help care for some of the eggs for months at their school before releasing the salmon fry into a local creek. I know I got to do this when I taught 4th grade, and my own kids did, too!

This book combines beautiful illustrations with inviting & informative text that captures each unique stage of the Coho salmon. The back matter provides additional information about the life cycle stages. It would be a fantastic addition to your salmon or life cycles unit!

💛 LIBRARY STACK 💛 Thought I’d stop and take a mom 💛 LIBRARY STACK 💛

Thought I’d stop and take a moment to admire my current checkouts from the local library, especially since I was recently reminded that February is National Library Lovers’ Month.

Do I often get strange looks and questions when another patron sees me with a large stack of picture books at the self-checkout desk? Yes, but that hasn’t stopped me!

Which titles from this stack would you reach for first?
