ABOUT THIS BOOK

It’s the first day of school at Frederick Douglass Elementary and everyone’s just a little bit nervous, especially the school itself. What will the children do once they come? Will they like the school? Will they be nice to him?

The school has a rough start, but as the day goes on, he soon recovers when he sees that he’s not the only one going through first-day jitters.

This book is great for discussing feelings about the first day of school!

School's First Day of School by Adam Rex is a great story to share at the beginning of the school year. This story can help start a discussion about how students feel about the first day of school.

SCHOOL’S FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

This resource includes several ways to work on comprehension. These graphic organizers help students retell or summarize the story. When working on story elements, I like to use these spin-a-story pages. As students spin and identify each element, they can color that section of the wheel. If students land on that space again, they still identify the element, but can color another small section of the picture.

After reading School's First Day of School, you can check student comprehension with these activities. There are graphic organizers to work on summarizing and retell and this spinner activity helps students focus on story elements.

Here’s a closer look at the comprehension and discussion questions. There are 12 cards in all to help students think and talk about the story as they read. There is also an option to have students respond to these questions in writing.

These 12 question cards can help guide your discussion while reading School's First Day of School. There is also an option to have students respond to these questions in written form.

I chose 12 vocabulary words to focus on for this story. Each vocabulary word has a matching definition card. These cards can be put in a pocket chart display or used in a memory matching game. You could also have students glue these into a notebook where students can draw a picture or write an original sentence with the words. I have included a vocabulary match-up page to help check for understanding of these words.

I selected 12 vocabulary words from School's First Day of School. Each vocabulary card has a matching definition. You can check for student understanding of the terms using this vocabulary match-up page.

The main character of this story is the school. As you read the story, it’s important to point out how the school feels before the first day of school, on the first day of school, and after the first day of school. Then students can focus on why the school’s feelings and actions changed during the story. I added this graphic organizer to help students track their thinking.

While reading School's First Day of School, students can track how the school feels before school starts, on the first day of school, and after the first day. It's important for students to reflect on why the school's feelings changed during the story.

SCHOOL CRAFT & WRITING

Because the school is the main character in this story, I wanted to include a school craft with this resource. These writing booklets are created using a red sheet of paper folded hamburger style. There are templates included to add all of the details to the school. You can choose whether your school craft has the same name as the book or is simply labeled ‘SCHOOL’.

School's First Day of School - This school craft doubles as a writing booklet. Students can respond to the story or to one of the included writing prompts.

When the school booklet is opened, it reveals a piece of student writing. I have included several suggestions for writing prompts, but you can always choose your own. One of the templates is a blank rectangle so students can draw and color a picture to match their writing and place inside of the booklet.

FUN FACT FREEBIE

After reading this book at the beginning of the school year, students can complete these fun fact pages. One page helps students learn more about their school and the other is more of an all about me page. There is room for students to add a colorful drawing on each page. Or, you could print these pages on Astrobrights paper and attach a photo or drawing into the picture space.

      Hi Judy,
The Fun Facts freebie should start downloading as soon as you confirm your email subscription. If that didn’t happen, another email should follow up shortly after with “Welcome to the Free Resource Library” as a subject line. Did you get either of those emails?

I just checked with my email provider. It looks like an email to confirm your subscription was sent this afternoon. Be sure to check all of your folders (inbox, spam, junk, promotions, etc). Sometimes these emails end up there.

      Hi Melissa,
According to my email service provider, the email address is showing up as bounced, or unable to be delivered. If I had to guess, I’d say it was probably blocked by your school district. Unfortunately, there isn’t anything I can do on my end unless you’d like to sign up for the freebie with a personal email address.

💛 LIBRARY STACK 💛 Thought I’d stop and take a mom 💛 LIBRARY STACK 💛

Thought I’d stop and take a moment to admire my current checkouts from the local library, especially since I was recently reminded that February is National Library Lovers’ Month.

Do I often get strange looks and questions when another patron sees me with a large stack of picture books at the self-checkout desk? Yes, but that hasn’t stopped me!

Which titles from this stack would you reach for first?
My favorite library find this week dives deep bene My favorite library find this week dives deep beneath the surface to explore hidden treasures.

Alternating between verse and facts, this book gives readers a front row seat to some of the biggest shipwrecks ever found. We also get introduced to some of the scientists, divers, and treasure hunters behind these discoveries.

Whether you know an aspiring marine archaeologist or someone who loves a good treasure hunt, this book would be a good fit for any curious, adventurous reader!

A princess who is intelligent, has a kind & gentle A princess who is intelligent, has a kind & gentle heart, and one who stays true to herself? Yes, please!

Set in the mountains of Joseon, we meet Jeongsoon. She has a heart of jade, and wants to become princess so she can help the hungry children in her village.

It isn’t long before she enters the Princess Challenge and faces three tests: Manners, Wisdom, and the Sleep Test.

While Jeongsoon is far from perfect, she stays true to herself and wins the favor of the queen.

This story adds a fresh perspective on the classic tale of The Princess and the Pea. My favorite part was the Sleep Test twist! I love that the backmatter includes information about the real-life Queen Jeongsoon of South Korea.

A big thank you to the publisher for sharing this new picture book with my family!

My favorite library find this week combines friend My favorite library find this week combines friendship and adventure with a story about how paper is made.

Under a tree, a boy with a book and girl with a paper plane meet and play over the course of a wonderful day. Then they are parted - perhaps never to meet again.

Soon their tree is felled and starts a new journey to become paper to make hundreds of different things...including a book for a girl and a notepad for a boy.

Can a new paper plane find its way to reunite the friends again?

⭐️ Not only would this story be a great addition to your friendship collection, but you might want to check it out before Earth Day since it also explains how paper is made.

As teachers and parents, we want our kids to be ki As teachers and parents, we want our kids to be kind to others. Through books, we can show students how to see the good in others, how to be there for other people, how to help others feel included, how to be kind even when it is hard, and how spreading kindness can come back around.

In other words, books can help us send the message that kindness is important and something we value.

🩷 What are your favorite kindness books for kids?

My favorite library find this week might surprise My favorite library find this week might surprise you, especially if you know how much I don’t like spiders! This one combines amazing artwork with a meaningful message, which makes it a must-read!

Kiara spent her days spinning webs to catch lunch. One day an extraordinary web catches her eye, and she becomes determined to create something just as amazing. Unfortunately, with every new creation comes someone (or something) that carelessly destroys her hard work.

“HEY! I WORKED HARD ON THAT!”

Then Kiara meets Orb, a weaver, who helps her gain a fresh perspective - one that shifts the focus away from the result and towards the journey (and friends) she can make along the way.

There’s a new friend with a story to share in the There’s a new friend with a story to share in the Big Bright Feelings series!

Meet Sammy…

Sammy LOVES having fun. Especially at home. But in big groups - like at school, birthday parties, even the ice cream truck - he doesn’t love feeling like other people are looking at him, and it’s really hard talking to other people. Everyone tells Sammy not to be so shy. But one day, it gets so hard and scary that he starts to turn pink, and then pinker…until he’s bright pink ALL OVER! Then he doesn’t want to see anyone or do anything. But hiding out-alone-isn’t very fun. Can Sammy learn how to tackle his fears - and go back to his usual color?

Have you read this one yet? Be sure to swipe to see the rest of the books in this series. They are soooo good for starting conversations about feelings, and would be a great addition to your SEL collection!
