About This Book
Written by: Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah with Kelly DiPucchio
Illustrated by: Tricia Tusa
Lily and Salma are best friends. They like doing all the same things, and they always eat lunch together. Lily eats peanut butter and Salma eats hummus – but what’s that between friends? It turns out, a lot. Before they know it, a food fight breaks out. Can Lily and Salma put aside their differences? Or will a sandwich come between them?
If your students are allowing their differences to get in the way of making new friends, this is a must-read for your classroom!
The Sandwich Swap Activities
Like many of my book companions, this one has a large focus on comprehension and vocabulary. These 12 cards will help guide your discussion of the story.
If you’re working on story elements, be sure to use this spinner activity.
To help with sequencing, I created this Sequence Sandwich activity. Students will put six events from the story into the order they happened. These cards can then be tucked and stapled inside of the sandwich bread to create a sequence sandwich.
Throughout the book, students will be exposed to new or unfamiliar terms. I have selected 12 words to focus on for this story. Each vocabulary card also has a matching definition. These can be used in a pocket chart display or students can play a memory matching game for further practice.
I have also added these graphic organizers and a vocabulary matching page to use with the story.
The Sandwich Swap Craft & Writing Booklet
Sticking with the sandwich theme, I have created a sandwich craft. Students can respond to the text in a variety of ways on each of the sandwich fixing templates. I have included a handful of writing ideas for your students, but you can always choose your own.
Once all of the writing is complete, all of the pages can be stapled together into a sandwich booklet.
You can find all of these activities in my book companion for The Sandwich Swap. If you like these resources, be sure to take a look at the rest of my book activities.
