Sneezy the Snowman Activities

This picture book companion focuses mainly on comprehension and vocabulary. These 6 comprehension questions will help guide the discussion as you read. Students can also respond to these questions in writing.

After reading the story, students can put the story back together with this sequencing activity. I like to print the story events on a different color of paper than the main page so it adds a bit of color.

Once students can sequence the story, they are more prepared to retell or summarize the story. I have even included a snowman spinner activity that focuses on story elements.

I chose 6 vocabulary words for this story. Each vocabulary card has a matching definition. Students can play a memory matching game or use them in a pocket chart center. Then, students can work with their vocabulary words using this fill-in-the-blanks page and vocabulary match-up activity. To take vocabulary one step further, you can use the winter word templates with the vocabulary words. Students write the word on the hat. On the snowman, students can write an original sentence, draw a picture, write synonyms, etc. These can be put on display or even made into a small classroom book after adding other vocabulary words you are learning.

I also love to use craft booklets to get my students to respond to reading. This snowman template comes in three different options (lines, no lines, and lines with a picture space). After students have completed their reading responses, they can staple the pages together with the craft on top to create a snowman booklet.

Every time the children rebuild Sneezy the Snowman, they offer a new item of clothing for Sneezy to wear to stay warm. For a simple written response, you can have students change up the text and make small substitutions to keep the rhythm of the author’s writing style. These can stand alone or be paired with the snowman craft.
